RESUMO

We present CiftiStorm, an electrophysiological source imaging (ESI) pipeline incorporating recently developed methods to improve forward and inverse solutions. The CiftiStorm pipeline produces Human Connectome Project (HCP) and megconnectome-compliant outputs from dataset inputs with varying degrees of spatial resolution. The input data can range from low-sensor-density electroencephalogram (EEG) or magnetoencephalogram (MEG) recordings without structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) to high-density EEG/MEG recordings with an HCP multimodal sMRI compliant protocol. CiftiStorm introduces a numerical quality control of the lead field and geometrical corrections to the head and source models for forward modeling. For the inverse modeling, we present a Bayesian estimation of the cross-spectrum of sources based on multiple priors. We facilitate ESI in the T1w/FSAverage32k high-resolution space obtained from individual sMRI. We validate this feature by comparing CiftiStorm outputs for EEG and MRI data from the Cuban Human Brain Mapping Project (CHBMP) acquired with technologies a decade before the HCP MEG and MRI standardized dataset.

This paper extends frequency domain quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) methods pursuing higher sensitivity to detect Brain Developmental Disorders. Prior qEEG work lacked integration of cross-spectral information omitting important functional connectivity descriptors. Lack of geographical diversity precluded accounting for site-specific variance, increasing qEEG nuisance variance. We ameliorate these weaknesses. (i) Create lifespan Riemannian multinational qEEG norms for cross-spectral tensors. These norms result from the HarMNqEEG project fostered by the Global Brain Consortium. We calculate the norms with data from 9 countries, 12 devices, and 14 studies, including 1564 subjects. Instead of raw data, only anonymized metadata and EEG cross-spectral tensors were shared. After visual and automatic quality control, developmental equations for the mean and standard deviation of qEEG traditional and Riemannian DPs were calculated using additive mixed-effects models. We demonstrate qEEG "batch effects" and provide methods to calculate harmonized z-scores. (ii) We also show that harmonized Riemannian norms produce z-scores with increased diagnostic accuracy predicting brain dysfunction produced by malnutrition in the first year of life and detecting COVID induced brain dysfunction. (iii) We offer open code and data to calculate different individual z-scores from the HarMNqEEG dataset. These results contribute to developing bias-free, low-cost neuroimaging technologies applicable in various health settings.

RESUMO

The Cuban Human Brain Mapping Project (CHBMP) repository is an open multimodal neuroimaging and cognitive dataset from 282 young and middle age healthy participants (31.9 ± 9.3 years, age range 18-68 years). This dataset was acquired from 2004 to 2008 as a subset of a larger stratified random sample of 2,019 participants from La Lisa municipality in La Habana, Cuba. The exclusion criteria included the presence of disease or brain dysfunctions. Participant data that is being shared comprises i) high-density (64-120 channels) resting-state electroencephalograms (EEG), ii) magnetic resonance images (MRI), iii) psychological tests (MMSE, WAIS-III, computerized go-no go reaction time), as well as iv,) demographic information (age, gender, education, ethnicity, handedness, and weight). The EEG data contains recordings with at least 30 minutes in duration including the following conditions: eyes closed, eyes open, hyperventilation, and subsequent recovery. The MRI consists of anatomical T1 as well as diffusion-weighted (DWI) images acquired on a 1.5 Tesla system. The dataset presented here is hosted by Synapse.org and available at https://chbmp-open.loris.ca .

RESUMO

COVID-19-induced brain dysfunction (CIBD) will put a strain on world health systems complicated by the heterogeneity of manifestations, which is higher than any other aspect of human biology. Neural, psychological and social causes must be disentangled for effective population-level management of CIBD. International cooperation is required in order to discover neurotechnologies appropriate for health systems.

The neural basis of selective attention within hierarchically organized Navon figures has been extensively studied with event related potentials (ERPs), by contrasting responses obtained when attending the global and the local echelons. The findings are inherently ambiguous because both levels are always presented together. Thus, only a mixture of the brain responses to two levels can be observed. Here, we use a method that allows unveiling of global and local letters at distinct times, enabling estimation of separate ERPs related to each level. Two interspersed oddball streams were presented, each using letters from one level and comprised of frequent distracters and rare targets. Previous work and our Experiment 1 show that it is difficult to divide attention between two such streams of stimuli. ERP recording in Experiment 2 evinced an early selection negativity (SN, with latencies to the 50% area of about 266 ms for global distracters and 276 ms for local distracters) that was larger for attended relative to unattended distracters. The SN was larger over right posterior occipito-temporal derivations for global stimuli and over left posterior occipito-temporal derivations for local stimuli (although the latter was less strongly lateralized). A discrimination negativity (DN, accompanied by a P3b) was larger for attended targets relative to attended distracters, with latencies to the 50% area of about 316 ms for global stimuli and 301 ms for local stimuli, which presented a similar distribution for both levels over left temporo-parietal electrodes. The two negativities apparently index successive stages in the processing of a selected level within a compound figure. By resolving the ambiguity of traditional designs, our method allowed us to observe the effects of attention for each hierarchical level on its own.

Objects frequently have a hierarchical organization (tree-branch-leaf). How do we select the level to be attended? This has been explored with compound letters: a global letter built from local letters. One explanation, backed by much empirical support, is that attentional competition is biased toward certain spatial frequency (SF) bands across all locations and objects (a SF filter). This view assumes that the global and local letters are carried respectively by low and high SF bands, and that the bias can persist over time. Here we advocate a complementary view in which perception of hierarchical level is determined by how we represent letters in object-files. Although many properties bound to an object-file (i.e., position, color, even shape) can mutate without affecting its persistence over time, we posit that same object-file cannot be used to store information from different hierarchical levels. Thus, selection of level would be independent from locations but not from the way objects are represented at each moment. These views were contrasted via an attentional blink paradigm that presented letters within compound figures, but only one level at a time. Attending to two letters in rapid succession was easier if they were at the same-compared to different-levels, as predicted by both accounts. However, only the object-file account was able to explain why it was easier to report two targets on the same moving object compared to the same targets on distinct objects. The interference of different masks on target recognition was also easier to predict by the object-file account than by an SF filter. The methods introduced here allowed us to investigate attention to hierarchical levels and to object-files within the same empirical framework. The data suggests that SF information is used to structure the internal organization of object representations, a process understood best by integrating object-file theory with previous models of hierarchical perception.

Se hace un pesquisaje de los defectos auditivos en lactantes mediante potenciales auditivos de tallo cerebral, para esto se dividen los niños en dos grupos, el primer grupo compuesto por 98 lactantes seleccionados en las consultas de puericultura; para ser seleccionadas las historias clínicas de los niños debían cumplir determinados requisitos, que aseguraran una alta probabilidad de audición normal, edad gestacional mayor de 38 semanas, peso al nacer mayor de 3 000 gramos, apgar mayor que 7, no haber presentado asfixia neonatal, hiperbilirrubinemia, antecedentes familiares de sordera, no haber tenido tratamiento previo con drogas ototóxicas y no presentar antecedentes patológicos importantes, el otro grupo eran lactantes con riesgo de pérdida auditiva, estaba compuesto por 257 niños seleccionados siguiendo el criterio de constatar al menos uno de los factores de riesgo para defectos auditivos. Los registros se realizaron en una cámara de Faraday con aislamiento acústico. El ruido de fondo se midió en unidades de nivel de presión sonora (SPL) con un sonómetro modelo RTT-23 y micrófono de 1 pulgada con filtro de octava. Se midieron las latencias y amplitudes de los picos I, III, y V de los PEATC (Potenciales Evocados Auditivos de Tallo Cerebral)
